When Garruth is approached by a bitter old merchant to avenge the death of his son, a voice on the wind compels Garruth to accept the contract he would otherwise have refused leads him to Titus, a supposed Prophet who has built a temple in the middle of nowhere, to a god of whom Garruth has never heard. While the Prophet urges forgiveness, Garruth hopes to close the bloody loop which has brought them all together. But the song on the wind has other plans for him, and he begins to suspect that he is nothing more than the unwitting tool of forces which he cannot understand, let alone escape.
